Effects of cooling rates on microporosity in DC casting Al-Li alloy

During the direct chill (DC) casting process, primary cooling from mold and bottom block, secondary waterjets produce a concave solid shell. The depth of this liquid pocket mushy zone not only depends on solidification range alloy but also boundary conditions such as rates. Al-Li alloys solidify in long increasing susceptibility porosity nucleation semi-solid region. In study, effects rate formation were quantified for large ingot using X-ray computed tomography (XCT). By characterizing pore size distributions at four different conditions, correlation between mechanical properties both room high temperatures microstructure features was identified. constitutive equations constructed. It is found that reduces grain size, increases number density micropores, minimizes pores, thereby improving performance. Therefore, zones deep pockets can be effectively controlled by controlling DC obtaining castings with excellent properties.
