Effectiveness of Road Cool Pavements, Greenery, and Canopies to Reduce the Urban Heat Island Effects

The ongoing climate change is manifesting itself through the increasing expansion of Urban Heat Island (UHI) effects. This paper evaluates microclimate benefits due to cool road pavements, greenery, and photovoltaic canopies in a parking lot Fondi (Italy), identifying best strategy counteract negative effects UHIs. ENVI-met software allowed microclimatic analysis examined area July 2022 comparison thermal performances between current asphalt pavement ten alternative scenarios. proposed layouts were investigated terms air temperature (AT), surface (ST), mean radiant (MRT), predicted vote (PMV). results showed that existing worst one, while integrated with vegetation provides appreciable benefits. Compared layout, new scenario characterized by light porous concrete for carriageable pavements sidewalks, grass grid pavers stalls, 2-m-high border hedge, 15-m-high trees implies reductions AT above 3 °C, ST 30 MRT 20 maximum PMV value equal 2.2.
