Effective Moisture Evolution since the Last Glacial Maximum Revealed by a Loess Record from the Westerlies-Dominated Ili Basin, NW China

چکیده

Moisture variation is extremely relevant for the stability of ecosystems in Central Asia (CA). Therefore, moisture evolution and its potential driving mechanism over region are always a hot research topic. Although much effort has been devoted to understanding processes evolutions CA during Quaternary, particularly Holocene, associated underlying mechanisms remain state persistent debate. In this study, granulometry, clay mineral chroma properties loess section (named ZSP section) westerlies-dominated Ili Basin, NW China investigated. With accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon dating (AMS 14C)-based Bayesian age–depth model, we provide sensitive record effective since last glacial maximum (LGM) basin, results help enhance possible westerly climate change. Comparisons mineralogy indices shows that study area involved Northern Hemisphere dust cycle as source, content <2 μm grain size fraction can thereby be used reflect westerlies’ intensity. After deducting complicated influencing factors lightness changes throughout section, calibrated adopted indicate regional moisture. Our findings show relatively abundant LGM middle–late with dry conditions deglaciation early Holocene. We argue intensity was main factor Basin LGM. Local source evaporation intra-annual control time westerlies exerted minor influence on changes.

Response of spatial vegetation distribution in China to climate changes since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM)

Analyzing how climate change affects vegetation distribution is one of the central issues of global change ecology as this has important implications for the carbon budget of terrestrial vegetation. Mapping vegetation distribution under historical climate scenarios is essential for understanding the response of vegetation distribution to future climatic changes. The reconstructions of palaeoveg...

The Last Glacial Maximum.

We used 5704 14C, 10Be, and 3He ages that span the interval from 10,000 to 50,000 years ago (10 to 50 ka) to constrain the timing of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) in terms of global ice-sheet and mountain-glacier extent. Growth of the ice sheets to their maximum positions occurred between 33.0 and 26.5 ka in response to climate forcing from decreases in northern summer insolation, tropical Pac...

Last Glacial loess in the conterminous USA

The conterminous United States contains an extensive and generally well-studied record of Last Glacial loess. The loess occurs in diverse physiographic provinces, and under a wide range of climatic and ecological conditions. Both glacial and non-glacial loess sources are present, and many properties of the loess vary systematically with distance from loess sources. United States’ midcontinent L...

Global glacial ice volume and Last Glacial Maximum duration from an extended Barbados sea level record

Fundamental characteristics of the climate system during the most recent precessional cycle of the Earth’s orbit around the Sun consist of the final expansion of land ice to its maximum extent, the subsequent episode of deglaciation, and the variations of global sea level that accompanied these events. In order to address the important issue of the variation of continental ice volume and relate...

Factors controlling variability in the oxidative capacity of the troposphere since the Last Glacial Maximum

The oxidative capacity of past atmospheres is highly uncertain. We present here a new climate–biosphere– chemistry modeling framework to determine oxidant levels in the present and past troposphere. We use the GEOS-Chem chemical transport model driven by meteorological fields from the NASA Goddard Institute of Space Studies (GISS) ModelE, with land cover and fire emissions from dynamic global v...
