Effective module level encapsulation of CIGS solar cells with Al2O3 thin film grown by atomic layer deposition

An effective encapsulation solution for flexible CIGS is urgently needed to ensure a competitive market entry of the technology. In this work, we demonstrate feasibility effectively encapsulate module-level (10 × 10 cm2) CIGS/glass solar cells by employing thin Al2O3 barrier layer grown atomic deposition (ALD). As determined direct methodology, nm ALD-Al2O3 proved be sufficient in preventing electrical degradation Al:ZnO (AZO) window upon exposure damp heat test (DHT) and equally cm2 mini-modules efficient blockage moisture ingress. encapsulated retain an average 80% 72% initial efficiency after 1000 2000 h DHT, respectively. Whereas unencapsulated modules drop 67% (1000 DHT) 22% (2000 efficiency. Thanks presence layer, less occurred AZO P3 interconnection; also shunting paths appeared – both led lower FF mini-modules. However, issue Na migration out observed, which negatively impacts module stability during DHT.
