Effect of tributary inflow on reservoir turbidity current

Fluvial flows carrying high sediment loads may plunge into reservoirs to form turbidity currents. However, the effects of tributary inflows on reservoir currents have remained poorly understood date. Here a 2D double layer-averaged model is used investigate series laboratory-scale numerical cases. By probing hydro-sediment-morphodynamic processes, we find that location and inflow conditions distinct formation propagation currents, lead complicated flow dynamics bed deformation at confluence. Two exchange patterns are generated confluence: current intrusion from main channel tributary; highly concentrated, sediment-laden plunging in channel. Tributary cause stable point migrate downstream conducive current, whilst opposite holds case clear-water tributary. leads lower flushing efficiency as compared its counterpart without Yet concentration reinforce reservoir, thereby increasing efficiency. Around confluence, planar distributions velocity shear stress resemble their counterparts confluence low or clear water. Yet, exhibits aggradation near due contrast pure scour river with load. Appropriate account required studies for devising strategies long-term maintenance capacity.
