Effect of surfactants on drop formation flow patterns in a flow-focusing microchannel

چکیده

The formation of droplets in an immiscible liquid the presence different surfactants was studied experimentally using a flow-focusing microchannel. A low viscosity silicone oil (4.6 mPa s) used as continuous phase and mixture 48% w/w water 52% glycerol dispersed phase. cationic (CMCDTAB = 20 mM), anionic (CMCSDS 11 non-ionic (CMCTX100 3.5 mM) surfactant were added aqueous phase, at several concentrations. Five patterns drop identified, namely squeezing, dripping, jetting, threading tip streaming/jetting, whose boundaries affected by type concentration. Using dynamic interfacial tension values, it possible to plot universal flow pattern map with capillary numbers two phases coordinates, where transition between dripping jetting collapsed for all fluid systems considered, including solutions without surfactants.

Valve-based flow focusing for drop formation

Picoliter drops made in microfluidic devices can serve as individual compartments for chemical reactions and can be processed at kilohertz rates with high precision. This combination of speed and containment is very useful for highthroughput screening, for discovering novel drugs, for sorting analytes and worms, and for directed evolution of enzymes and cells. For applications in microfluidics,...

Two-phase Flow Patterns, Pressure Drop and Heat Transfer during Boiling in Minichannel and Microchannel Flow Passages of Compact Evaporators

The small hydraulic diameters employed during flow boiling in compact evaporator passages are becoming more important as they are employed in diverse applications including electronics cooling and fuel cell evaporators. The high pressure drop characteristics of these passages are particularly important as they alter the flow and heat transfer, especially in parallel multi-channel configuration....

Two-fluid Electrokinetic Flow in a Circular Microchannel (RESEARCH NOTE)

The two-fluid flow is produced by the combined effects of electroosmotic force in a conducting liquid and pressure gradient force in a non-conducting liquid. The Poisson-Boltzmann and Navier-Stokes equations are solved analytically; and the effects of governing parameters are examined. Poiseuille number increases with increasing the parameters involved. In the absence of pressure gradient, the ...
