Effect of laser beam offset on dissimilar laser welding of tantalum to 304 stainless steel

Cylinders made of tantalum (Ta) and tubes 304 stainless steel (304SS) were successfully joined by laser welding under different offsets. The experimental results indicated that satisfactory weld formations obtained. fusion zone (FZ) was found to consist the Fe–Cr solution Fe2Ta phase. In addition, intermetallic compounds (IMCs) layer generated at Ta/FZ interface. When beam offset − 0.2 mm (0.2 on side), interfacial IMC consisted Fe2Ta. Thicker with compositions + FeTa offsets 0 (center) Ta side). Numerical simulation showed peak temperature would be increased when from side side, which led thicker new generation FeTa. microhardness in FZ also fluctuated since composed hard soft solution. Tensile test highest value 308.3 MPa obtained mm.
