Educational achievement among East Asian schoolchildren 1967–2020: A thematic review of the literature

The high educational achievement among East Asian nations in ILSAs like TIMSS and PISA is widely known. However, a comprehensive review of the research literature lacking. current study reviewed English between 1967–2020 with aim to identify underlying explanatory factors their relative importance regard schoolchildren (Grade 5–10) Japan, China, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore. N = 99 studies, seven main themes 53 corresponding sub-themes for these years were discerned. 56 studies emphasized cultural quantity variables as pertinent populations. Cultural such more annual hours, higher effort, family expectations dominate variables, often emerging cross-national theme countries. Another significance are non-cognitive abilities math self-concept resilience. Other include higher-than average cognitive ability levels, although that has partly been contested, well curricular themes.
