Education for Sustainable Development in Higher Education Rankings: Challenges and Opportunities for Developing Internationally Comparable Indicators

As more higher education institutions strive to embed sustainable development principles in their teaching, it becomes increasingly important identify indicators that can measure institutional contribution a meaningful and internationally comparable manner. This paper shows existing sustainability rankings, such as the UI Green Metric THE Impact ranking, have paid relatively little attention on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). In quest develop U-Multirank—the multi-dimensional transparency ranking tool—we reviewed literature, consulted experts, ran survey amongst practitioners. article summarises opportunities challenges developing ESD sector, discussing indicator relevance, validity, feasibility. The results suggest (i) are considered highly relevant by diverse stakeholders; (ii) majority of HEIs surveyed planning collect data within 3 years, signalling good prospects feasibility; (iii) proposed so far still lack criteria would allow one sufficiently compare these across countries, inhibiting validity. At least three potential definitions used HEIs. this contribute discussion identifying appropriate use international rankings.
