Dretske on Metaphysics and Freedom
In this paper, Fred Dretske’s component theory of action is evaluated. Dretske claims that in his theory reasons are parts or components of action. Thus, reasons do not cause actions because a part cannot cause the whole whose part it is. According to Dretske, this helps in eliminating a problem in compatibilism. Suppose reasons are causes of actions. Now, if X gives Y a reason from which she a...

متن کاملOn the Metaphysics of Production
Since the pre-Socratic period of philosophy, there have been two basic metaphysical views. One holds that there are substances or things, that is, atemporal entities in the world. The other insists that there are processes, that is, intrinsically temporal phenomena. These metaphysical assumptions tend to strongly influence how the subject of the inquiry or action is conceptualized. The thing-or...
متن کاملOn the Metaphysics of Belief
There is a traditional picture of belief, according to which someone's having a belief is that person's standing in a certain relation to an abstract object, a proposition. My dissertation examines the metaphysical demands that two problems for this picture of belief make on these abstract objects. The first problem comes to us from Frege's "On Sense and Reference," and the second concerns a ce...
متن کاملOn the Metaphysics of Numbers
We reason that if there are nurnbers, they are abstract and therefore acausal. The question thus arises as to how we have knowledge of these objects. My thesis consists of three parts, each of which explores a response to this question. Charles Parsons has argued that we know about the numbers because we can apprehend (or "intuit") some abstract objects such as expression-types which form a mod...
