Ecotoxicological Assessment of Potentially Toxic Elements in Waterworks Sludge Amended Soils Using Bermudagrass Bioassay

چکیده

Waterworks sludge has the potential to be used as a soil amendment, but ecotoxicological risk of potentially toxic elements should not underestimated. In this regard, study determined contents nine (Cr, Ni, Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, As, Mn, and Al) bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.] grown in waterworks amended soils. Treatments involved different loading rates sludge, types, fertilization options that represented scenarios greening applications. The recommended metal levels plant tissues maximum tolerable for feeding cattle are adopted benchmarks gauging first second trophic ecosystem, respectively. No exceeded when rate is higher than 50% (wt/wt). When various treatments applied 25% (wt/wt) soils, accumulation aluminum zinc deserves our attention because few samples exceed levels. They mainly below-ground biomass. Overall, using amendment does cause an obvious risk. findings can provide valuable reference other cities sustainable management sludge.

Toxic Elements in Soils

MAMMALS and birds sometimes seek shelter or nesting sites in the ground. Many of them scarcely affect the soil as a medium for plant growth. A notable exception is the soil-dwelling rodents. Although their acreweight is usually only about a few pounds even in the uncultivated land, their soil transporting activities sometimes are considerable. In building their tunnels and nests, they transport...

Toxic metals in sewage sludge-amended soils: has promotion of beneficial use discounted the risks?

Land application of contaminated waste products has been defended as beneficial use by some scientists and regulators, based on the premise that the behavior of any toxins accumulated in soils from this practice is reasonably well understood and will not have detrimental agronomic or environmental impacts into the foreseeable future. In this review, I use the case of toxic metals in sewage slud...

Mobility of heavy metals in soils amended with sewage sludge

Morera, M. T., Echeverría, J. C. and Garrido, J. J. 2001. Mobility of heavy metals in soils amended with sewage sludge. Can. J. Soil Sci. 81: 405–414. Sewage sludges added to arable land can improve soil fertility and physical properties. However, the concentrations of heavy metals commonly found in sludges limits their application to soil. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the mobility ...

Bioavailability of heavy metals in soils amended with sewage sludge

Morera, M. T., Echeverría J. and Garrido, J. 2002. Bioavailability of heavy metals in soils amended with sewage sludge. Can. J. Soil Sci. 82: 433–438. The recycling of sewage sludge to agricultural land results in the slow accumulation of potentially toxic heavy metals in soils. A greenhouse experiment was conducted to determine the bioavailability of Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn applied to soils in urban...

The Phytotoxicity Changes of Sewage Sludge-Amended Soils

The aim of the present study was the estimation of changes in the phytotoxicity of soils amended with sewage sludge with relation to Lepidium sativum, Sinapis alba and Sorghum saccharatum. The study was realised in the system of a plot experiment for a period of 29 months. Samples for analyses were taken at the beginning of the experiment, and then after 5, 17 and 29 months. Two kinds of sewage...
