Economics of co-firing rice straw in coal power plants in Vietnam

چکیده
As governments forced electricity producers to use more renewable energy sources, over a hundred thermal power plants in high-income countries turned biomass as partial or complete replacement for coal. Is the co-firing technology appropriate Vietnam? To assess we build an integrated model simulating economics, environmental and social implications of blending 5% rice straw two existing coal Vietnam. The business value is positive –straw cheaper than coal– but not large enough motivate stakeholders. external benefit –reduced air-borne pollution– are several times larger value. Within that benefit, avoided PM2.5 NOx emissions dominates CO2 emissions. net job creation effect positive: collecting creates employment using less destroys. This first assessment Vietnam one subtropical middle-income country. study only considers straw, it does address role government nor market functioning. price primary determinant There empirical economic justification public intervention promote Vietnam, mainly way reduce open-field burning. Local air quality goals, rather greenhouse gas reduction policy, can justify such regulations.

The results are reported of an energy analysis of a biomass/coal co-firing based power generation system, carried out to investigate the impacts of biomass co-firing on system performance. The power generation system is a typical pulverized coal-fired steam cycle unit, in which four biomass fuels (rice husk, pine sawdust, chicken litter, and refuse derived fuel) and two coals (bituminous coal a...
