East asian-eastern north american disjunction in the Onoclea sensibilis species complex: vicariance or peripatry?

چکیده

Disjunction between East Asian and eastern North American plants has been recognized since the time of Darwin. Although there is considerable evidence for congruent vicariance associated with late Neogene/Quaternary cooling among angiosperms, similar studies specific fern families (e.g., Osmundaceae Martinov) have appeared incongruous this pattern. Pteridologists continue to debate whether long-distance dispersal wind-blown spores could produced intercontinental disjunctions ferns. To date, however, state-of-the-art historical biogeographical approaches not applied problem. In investigation, multiple chloroplast gene (rbcL, atpA, atpB, matK) sequences ferns in family Onocleaceae Pic. Serm. are drawn from GenBank, including those recently sequenced genome O. sensibilis L. var. interrupta Maxim., used create molecular phylogenies using Bayesian (BEAUTi BEAST) techniques. Using contemporary relaxed clock divergence estimation fossil calibration, estimates populations Onoclea species complex consistently reconstructed as Pliocene (ca. 5 – 3.4 Ma), best-fitting biogeographic model a DIVA-like (exclusively vicariant) BIOGEOBEARS RASP4, low probability peripatry. Accordingly, these data appear pattern observed despite propensity pteridophytes. The lack peripatry lineage may be related presence short-lived green onocleoid ferns; hypothesis requires further investigation.

Timing the eastern Asian-eastern North American floristic disjunction: molecular clock corroborates paleontological estimates.

Sequence data of the chloroplast gene rbcL were used to estimate the time of the well-known eastern Asian-eastern North American floristic disjunction. Sequence divergence of rbcL was examined for 22 species of 11 genera (Campsis, Caulophyllum, Cornus, Decumaria, Liriodendron, Menispermum, Mitchella, Pachysandra, Penthorum, Podophyllum, and Phryma) representing a diverse array of flowering plan...

On Antheridial Metabolism in the Fern Species Onoclea sensibilis L.

Dopp (1) demonstrated that the extract from mature prothalli of the fern species Ptcridiwtn1 aquiilinunil (L.) Kuhln hastened the onset of antheridium formation in young prothalli of this species by several days and in the prothalli of Dryopteris filixwwlas (L). Schott by several weeks. Dopp's conclusion that the prothalli of P. aquilinit elaborate a specific antheridium-inducing factor was con...

The eastern Asian and eastern and western North American floristic disjunction: congruent phylogenetic patterns in seven diverse genera.

One of the most remarkable examples of intercontinental disjunction of the North Temperate Flora involves eastern Asia and eastern and western North America. Although there has been considerable interest in this phytogeographic pattern for over 150 years (e.g., Gray, 1859; Li, 1952; Graham, 1972; Boufford and Spongberg, 1983; Wu, 1983; Tiffney, 1985a, 1985b), relationships among taxa displaying...

Cordyceps cardinalis sp. nov., a new species of Cordyceps with an east Asian-eastern North American distribution.

Cordyceps cardinalis, a pathogen of lepidopteran larva, is described as a new species from the southern Appalachian Mountains of the eastern United States and from southeastern Japan. It is macroscopically similar to both C. militaris and C. pseudomilitaris, however, microscopic, cultural and molecular evidence support it being a phylogenetically distinct species. Cordyceps cardinalis is most s...

Biological Species Concepts in Eastern North American Populations of Lentinellus

As part of a biosystematic study of the Lentinellus ursinus species complex in eastern North America, field and herbarium specimens from North America, Central America, and Europe were examined. Crossing single basidiospore isolates demonstrated tetrapolar (bifactorial) mating systems. Three biological species are recognized as L. ursinus, L. angustifolius, and L. vulpinus. The production of gl...
