Early Winter Triggering of the Maud Rise Polynya

چکیده

What triggers Maud Rise polynya, a large opening in the winter Antarctic sea ice, is still debated. We show that upcoming of all polynyas can be detected early up to four months ahead, especially since 2002 expansion satellite observations. In polynya years, continuous anomalous ice thinning begins May, caused by atmospheric and oceanic forcings. Dynamically, an cyclonic circulation atmosphere ocean strengthens Weddell Gyre exerts anomalously intense stresses on ice. Thermodynamically, warm water advected intensified circulation, most importantly entrained into mixed layer, thins from below at beginning freezing season, preconditioning region for event later. This four-month-ahead pattern enables predictions improved expedition planning sensor deployment.

Explaining the Weddell Polynya--a large ocean eddy shed at Maud Rise.

Satellite observations have shown the occasional occurrence of a large opening in the sea-ice cover of the Weddell Sea, Antarctica, a phenomenon known as the Weddell Polynya. The transient appearance, position, size, and shape of the polynya is explained here by a mechanism by which modest variations in the large-scale oceanic flow past the Maud Rise seamount cause a horizontal cyclonic eddy to...

A Possible Link between the Weddell Polynya and the Southern Annular Mode*

Shortly after the advent of the first imaging passive microwave sensor on board a research satellite an anomalous climate feature was observed within the Weddell Sea. During the years 1974–1976, a 250 10 km area within the seasonal sea ice cover was virtually free of winter sea ice. This feature, the Weddell Polynya, was created as sea ice formation was inhibited by ocean convection that inject...

Recurring Polynyas Over the Cosmonaut Sea and the Maud Rise

Two polynyas over the deep ocean were observed in the Antarctic region during the winter of 1980: one near 43øE, 66øS (Cosmonaut polynya) and another near 2øE, 64øS (Maud Rise polynya). The time history of these two polynyas was examined on an alternate day basis using ice concentration maps from the Nimbus 7 scanning multichannel microwave radiometer (SMMR). A quantitative analysis of a study ...

Winter Atmospheric Forcing of the Ross Sea Polynya

Polynyas, or areas of combined open water and thin ice surrounded by sea and/or land ice, are thought to play important roles in heat transfer from ocean to atmosphere, ice production, the formation of dense shelf water, spring disinte gration of sea ice, and the sustenance of primary and secondary productivity in polar regions. This study examines the interannual variation of the Ross Sea Pol...

Late Cretaceous through Neogene Deep - Sea Benthic Foraminifers ( Maud Rise , Weddell Sea , Antarctica ) 1

Upper abyssal to lower bathyal benthic foraminifers from ODP Sites 689 (present water depth 2080 m) and 690 (present water depth 2941 m) on Maud Rise (eastern Weddell Sea, Antarctica) are reliable indicators of Maestrichtian through Neogene changes in the deep-water characteristics at high southern latitudes. Benthic foraminiferal faunas were divided into eight assemblages, with periods of faun...
