Early phonetic learning without phonetic categories: Insights from large-scale simulations on realistic input

چکیده

Significance Infants become attuned to the sounds of their native language(s) before they even speak. Hypotheses about what is being learned by infants have traditionally driven researchers’ attempts understand this surprising phenomenon. Here, we propose start, instead, from hypotheses how might learn. To implement mechanism-driven approach, introduce a quantitative modeling framework based on large-scale simulation learning process realistic input. It allows mechanisms be systematically linked testable predictions regarding infants’ attunement language(s). Through framework, obtain evidence for an account that challenges established theories are learning.

Statistical learning of phonetic categories: insights from a computational approach.

Recent evidence (Maye, Werker & Gerken, 2002) suggests that statistical learning may be an important mechanism for the acquisition of phonetic categories in the infant's native language. We examined the sufficiency of this hypothesis and its implications for development by implementing a statistical learning mechanism in a computational model based on a mixture of Gaussians (MOG) architecture. ...

Learning Phonetic Categories by Learning a Lexicon

Infants learn to segment words from fluent speech during the same period as they learn native language phonetic categories, yet accounts of phonetic category acquisition typically ignore information about the words in which speech sounds appear. We use a Bayesian model to illustrate how feedback from segmented words might constrain phonetic category learning, helping a learner disambiguate over...

Learning phonetic categories by tracking movements.

We explore in this study how infants may derive phonetic categories from adult input that are highly variable. Neural networks in the form of self-organizing maps (SOMs; ) were used to simulate unsupervised learning of Mandarin tones. In Simulation 1, we trained the SOMs with syllable-sized continuous F(0) contours, produced by multiple speakers in connected speech, and with the corresponding v...

Structure of Phonetic Categories

Recently, speech researchers have begun to examine the formation of speech sound (phonetic) categories and to analyze the internal structure of the consequent categories. One of the most prominent products of this subfield has been the Perceptual Magnet Effect (PME) and the attendant Native Language Magnet (NLM) theory of Kuhl (1991, 2000). In the present paper, a critical review of the evidenc...
