Early diagenetic constraints on Permian seawater chemistry from the Capitan Reef

چکیده
The Capitan Reef Complex in West Texas is famous for its high prevalence of early marine cements, unusual a Phanerozoic platform, leading some to suggest that Precambrian styles carbonate sedimentation enjoyed Permian encore. Here, we use patterns stable Ca, Mg, C and S isotopes better understand the environmental driver(s) enigmatic cementation. We find calcite most enriched 44Ca has ?34S values approach inferred composition seawater sulfate. Microbial sulfate reduction pore fluids must have been spatially temporally coincident with recrystallization primary phases, such substantial 34S-enriched was incorporated into diagenetic under relatively closed-system conditions. Moreover, magnitude 34S-enrichment carbonates relative strongly influenced by local conditions, fluid-buffered shelf, reef, upper slope preserving more seawater-like isotope ratios than sediment-buffered lower slope. Some samples are far those from modern sites similar depositional environments, possibly responding specific combinations sedimentary parameters (e.g., grain size, porosity, organic matter rain rate). Additionally, concentration Delaware Basin might slightly levels, extensive isotopic evolution waters during recrystallization. Based on data numerical model recrystallization, one driver seafloor cement precipitation water column [Ca2+]:[SO42?] ratio somewhere between 1 seawater.

Constraints on Conceptual and Quantitative Modeling of Early Diagenetic Sediment-Hosted Stratiform Copper Mineralization
Early diagenetic sediment-hosted stratiform copper (eSSC) mineralization results from low-temperature cuprous chloride complexes carried by saline aqueous solution circulating through footwall aquifers. Favorable copper solubilities are attained in moderately oxidizing, near-neutral pH solutions. That specific oxidation level is not determined by co-existence with hematite, with its near-indisc...
متن کاملCalcium isotope constraints on the end-Permian mass extinction.
The end-Permian mass extinction horizon is marked by an abrupt shift in style of carbonate sedimentation and a negative excursion in the carbon isotope (delta(13)C) composition of carbonate minerals. Several extinction scenarios consistent with these observations have been put forward. Secular variation in the calcium isotope (delta(44/40)Ca) composition of marine sediments provides a tool for ...

Dissolved fatty acids in seawater from a fringing reef and a barrier reef at Grand Cayman1
The concentration of dissolved fatty acids decreased in seawater as it flowed across a windward barrier reef at Grand Cayman. No comparable changes were observed over a leeward fringing reef although an increasingly enriched organic surface layer could be detected as distance from shore increased. across reefs (e.g. Johannes et al. 1972). Here I report observations on changes in dissolved fatty...
متن کاملEquisetites from the Early Permian of North-central Texas
Equisetites is a genus of fossil plants allied with, if not identical to, modern Equisetum, which is the only extant genus of the ancient lineage Sphenopsida. This class-level group of lower vascular plants is characterized by whorled vegetative and reproductive appendages, distinctive nodal and internodal morphologies, and unique "sporangiophores," specialized reproductive organs of uncertain ...
