Cosmic Acceleration and Modified Gravity
Abstract I briefly discuss some attempts to construct a consistent modification to General Relativity (GR) that might explain the observed late-time acceleration of the universe and provide an alternative to dark energy. I mention the issues facing extensions to GR, illustrate these with two specific examples, and discuss the resulting observational and theoretical obstacles. This article compr...
متن کاملGeneralized f ( R , φ , X ) Gravity and the Late - Time Cosmic Acceleration
High-precision observational data have confirmed with startling evidence that the Universe is currently undergoing a phase of accelerated expansion. This phase, one of the most important and challenging current problems in cosmology, represents a new imbalance in the governing gravitational equations. Historically, physics has addressed such imbalances by either identifying sources that were pr...
متن کاملCan neutrino viscosity drive the late time cosmic acceleration ?
In this paper it has been shown that the neutrino bulk viscous stresses can give rise to the late time acceleration of the universe. It is found that a number of spatially flat FRW models with a negative deceleration parameter can be constructed using neutrino viscosity and one of them mimics a ΛCDM model. This does not require any exotic dark energy component or any modification of gravity.
متن کاملLate-time acceleration and Phantom Divide Line Crossing with Non-minimal Coupling and Lorentz Invariance Violation
We consider two alternative dark energy models: a Lorentz invariance preserving model with a nonminimally coupled scalar field and a Lorentz invariance violating model with a minimally coupled scalar field. We study accelerated expansion and dynamics of equation of state parameter in these scenarios. While a minimally coupled scalar field has not the capability to be a successful dark energy ca...
متن کاملHolographic dark energy and late cosmic acceleration
It has been persuasively argued that the number of the effective degrees of freedom of a macroscopic system is proportional to its area rather than to its volume. This entails interesting consequences for cosmology. Here we present a model based on this “holographic principle” that accounts for the present stage of accelerated expansion of the Universe and significantly alleviates the coinciden...
