Dynamics of groundwater recharge near a semi-arid Mediterranean intermittent stream under wet and normal climate conditions

چکیده
In arid and semi-arid stream-dominated systems, the temporal variability in groundwater recharge has not been widely addressed. Various questions remain about sources of recharge, its patterns, appropriate measuring techniques. Hence, main objective present study was to assess changes that might affect pattern under wetter than normal surface water availability. Therefore, depth monitored near a Mediterranean intermittent stream on piedmont High Atlas Mountains mountain catchment Wadi Rheraya over two hydrological years (2014–2016) with different climate conditions: extreme wet conditions. Groundwater assessed using episodic master recession algorithm. During years, dominated by events high seasonality from seasons dry seasons. year (2014–2015), highest recorded following an flood, which deeply replenished groundwater. Furthermore, exceptional steady state induced rate. For several events, had multiple sources, mainly streamflow at local scale, but possibly precipitation, underflow, deep percolation or irrigation return upstream part catchment. Local likely be short-lived, lateral last longer. Consequently, algorithm estimated total could encompass various sources. future, more studies multidisciplinary approaches should carried out partition these determine their specific contributions. patterns (e.g., events) potential considered when assessing predicting recharge.

Recharge estimation and soil moisture dynamics in a Mediterranean, semi-arid karst region
Knowledge of soil moisture dynamics in the unsaturated soil zone provides valuable information on the temporal and spatial variability of groundwater recharge. This is especially true for the Mediterranean region, where a substantial fraction of long-term groundwater recharge is expected to occur during high magnitude precipitation events of aboveaverage wet winters. To elucidate process unders...
متن کاملImpacts of different tillage practices on some soil microbiological properties and crop yield under semi-arid Mediterranean conditions
Effects of six tillage practices on some soil microbiological properties and crop yields were evaluated for a clay soil (Typic Haploxererts) under semi-arid Mediterranean conditions in a three year study (2006-2009). The experiment was designed as a completely randomized-block with three replications. Treatments were: conventional tillage with residue incorporated (CT1), conventional tillage wi...
متن کاملEvaluation of meteorological, hydrological and groundwater resources indicators for drought monitoring and forecasting in a semi-arid climate
Drought as a natural phenomenon characterized by a significant decrease of water availability during a period of time and over a large area. In recent years, droughts and its frequent in arid and semi-arid regions like Iran on the one hand, and water demand has been rising on the other hand and, as a result, their impacts are being aggravated. Therefore, the meteorological and hydrological...
متن کاملCoupled modeling approach to assess climate change impacts on groundwater recharge and adaptation in arid areas
The effect of future climate scenarios on surface and groundwater resources was simulated using a modeling approach for an artificial recharge area in arid southern Iran. Future climate data for the periods of 2010–2030 and 2030–2050 were acquired from the Canadian Global Coupled Model (CGCM 3.1) for scenarios A1B, A2, and B1. These scenarios were adapted to the studied region using the delta-c...
