Escherichia coli Producing CMY-2 β-Lactamase in Retail Chicken, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA

To the Editor: Rates of resistance to various antimicrobial drugs are rapidly increasing in Escherichia coli, not only in health care settings but also in the community. The food supply is suspected as a potential source of antimicrobial-resistant E. coli strains, which include cephalosporin-resistant E. coli found in retail meat products and other types of food (1). We reported a high prevalen...

The Effect of Broiler Breeder Strain and Parent Flock Age on Hatchability and Fertile Hatchability

The effect of genetic strain (Ross 308; Cobb 500) and parent flock age (Ross at 32 and 36 weeks; Cobb at 26 and 44 weeks of age) on hatchability, fertile hatchability, Egg Weight Loss (EWL) and egg break out analysis were examined. At each flock age, 300 eggs from each treatment group were incubated. Thirty eggs from each treatment group were labeled individually for the measurements of Egg Wei...

Spread of extended spectrum cephalosporinase-producing Escherichia coli clones and plasmids from parent animals to broilers and to broiler meat in a production without use of cephalosporins.

OBJECTIVES This study investigated the occurrence of extended spectrum cephalosporinase (ESC)-producing Escherichia coli in a broiler production with no cephalosporin use and a low use of antimicrobials in general. Furthermore, it investigated whether the current consumption of aminopenicillins selects for ESC-producing E. coli and whether certain clones or plasmids spread from imported parent ...
