Durkheim’s ambivalence towards psychology and the foundations of sociology as a discipline

The paper explores Durkheim?s ambivalent position towards psychology, drawing on his debates with Comte, Tarde, and Wundt. In addressing this issue, we propose different types of anti-psychologism in sociology: epistemological (excluding psychological dimensions from sociological explanations), institutional (denying psychology the status science), strategic (establishing sociology as a scientific field). analysis shows that was more prominent comprehensive than anti-psychologism. Durkheim against psychologism sociology, but he incorporated into theory (cognitivism). He opted for clear distinction between fields, accepted an academic discipline (unlike Comte) even some ideas Wundt?s psychology. determined by historical developments emerging social sciences. competition neighbouring fields asked ?distinction?. At same time, shifting paradigms resulted converging positions (Durkheim Wundt). We argue common perception has overshadowed nuanced approach to factors work. It also long-term ?fear psychologism? lack relevant perspective sociology.
