Dryland vegetation pattern dynamics driven by inertial effects and secondary seed dispersal

چکیده

This manuscript tackles the study of vegetation pattern dynamics driven by inertial effects and secondary seed dispersal. To achieve this goal, an hyperbolic extension classical parabolic Klausmeier model vegetation, generally used to predict formation banded along slopes semiarid environments, has been here considered together with additional advective term mimicking downslope motion seeds. Linear stability analyses have carried out inspect dependence wave instability locus on parameters, particular emphasis role played time advection speed. Moreover, periodic travelling solutions are taken into account better characterize modulus direction migration speed striped patterns. Theoretical predictions corroborated numerical Investigations ecological implications also discussed. In particular, it is highlighted how nature may provide possible justifications about some controversial field observations.

Uncoupling the Effects of Seed Predation and Seed Dispersal by Granivorous Ants on Plant Population Dynamics

Secondary seed dispersal is an important plant-animal interaction, which is central to understanding plant population and community dynamics. Very little information is still available on the effects of dispersal on plant demography and, particularly, for ant-seed dispersal interactions. As many other interactions, seed dispersal by animals involves costs (seed predation) and benefits (seed dis...

On soil moisture–vegetation feedbacks and their possible effects on the dynamics of dryland ecosystems

[1] Soil moisture is the environmental variable synthesizing the effect of climate, soil, and vegetation on the dynamics of water-limited ecosystems. Unlike abiotic factors (e.g., soil texture and rainfall regime), the control exerted by vegetation composition and structure on soil moisture variability remains poorly understood. A number of field studies in dryland landscapes have found higher ...

Seed dispersal by neotropical seed predators.

From a plant's perspective, the difference between a seed predator and a seed disperser should be straightforward: attract animals that will disperse seeds and defend seeds from potential predators. Unlike pulp-eating frugivores, seed predators regularly encounter diverse plant protective mechanisms. The purpose of this paper is to examine feeding constraints, morphological adaptations, and the...

Secondary seed dispersal and its role in landscape organization

[1] Mathematical models of banded vegetation patterns predict rapid upslope migration of vegetated patches not realized in field observations, a key point of disagreement between theory and observation. It is shown that the disagreement between model results and field observations can arise from seed dispersal dynamics. Two representations of biomass movement are used to test the hypothesis tha...
