Drop impact on viscous liquid films

چکیده

When a liquid drop falls on solid substrate, the air layer between them delays occurrence of liquid–solid contact. For impacts smooth substrates, film can even prevent wetting, allowing to bounce off with dynamics identical that observed for superamphiphobic materials. In this paper, we investigate similar bouncing phenomena, occurring viscous films, mimic atomically goal probe their effective repellency. We elucidate mechanisms associated non-bouncing (floating) transition using experiments, simulations, and minimal model predicts main characteristics impact, contact time coefficient restitution. case highly or very thin impact is not affected by presence film. Within substrate-independent limit, suppressed once viscosity exceeds critical value, as substrates. thicker less both properties influence rebound conspire inhibit above thickness. This substrate-dependent regime also admits low-viscosity drops, in which alone determine limits

Impact of a viscous liquid drop.

We simulate the impact of a viscous liquid drop onto a smooth dry solid surface. As in experiments, when ambient air effects are negligible, impact flattens the falling drop without producing a splash. The no-slip boundary condition at the wall produces a boundary layer inside the liquid. Later, the flattening surface of the drop traces out the boundary layer. As a result, the eventual shape of...

The Oscillations of a Viscous Liquid Drop*

By virtue of Green's Theorem, it is shown that for the diffraction of anarbitrary two-dimensional incident pulse by a wedge of angle n, the ratio of the resultantvelocity potential to the corresponding value of the incident pulse at the corner ofthe wedge at any instant is equal to 2x/ (2x — n); and that for the diffraction of a three-dimensional pulse by a cone of solid angle u...

Nanofluidics: viscous dissipation in layered liquid films.

We studied the layer-by-layer collapse of molecularly thin films of a model lubricant confined between two atomically smooth substrates. The dynamics of the consecutive expulsion of four molecular layers were found to slow down with decreasing film thickness but showed no evidence for confinement-induced solidification. Using a hydrodynamic model, we show that the sliding friction of liquid lay...

Viscous to inertial crossover in liquid drop coalescence.

Using an electrical method and high-speed imaging, we probe drop coalescence down to 10 ns after the drops touch. By varying the liquid viscosity over two decades, we conclude that, at a sufficiently low approach velocity where deformation is not present, the drops coalesce with an unexpectedly late crossover time between a regime dominated by viscous and one dominated by inertial effects. We a...
