Drinking Strategies: Planned Drinking Versus Drinking to Thirst

In humans, thirst tends to be alleviated before complete rehydration is achieved. When sweating rates are high and ad libitum fluid consumption is not sufficient to replace sweat losses, a cumulative loss in body water results. Body mass losses of 2% or greater take time to accumulate. Dehydration of ≥  2% body mass is associated with impaired thermoregulatory function, elevated cardiovascular ...

Is Drinking to Thirst Optimum?

Backgrounds/Aims: Prior to 1969, athletes were advised to avoid drinking during exercise. At least 4 subsequent events led to the adoption of a radically different approach. By 1996, all exercisers were advised to drink ‘as much as tolerable’ in order to insure that they did not lose any weight during exercise – the ‘zero percent dehydration’ doctrine. This advice requires that athletes drink e...

The effect of drinking ad-libitum on performance during a 40-km cycling time trial in the heat

Purpose The main purpose of this study was to investigate if drinking ad-libitum can counteract potential negative effects of a hypohydrated start during a 40-km time trial in the heat. Methods Twelve well-trained males performed one 40-km cycling time trial while starting euhydrated (EU: no water during the time trial) and two 40-km cycling time trials while starting hypohydrated. During one h...

Drinking norms versus drinking behavior.

Data from 1002 households indicated that contextual factors (group size, subsequent activity) and individual difference factors (sex, extroversion, drinking frequency) differentially influenced consumption and normative ratings. These findings suggest that contextual cues serve as determinants of drinking norms and that drinking behavior reflects individual variation in sensitivity to these cues.

Immunogenicity of ad libitum drinking water administration of bovine serum albumin in Leghorn chickens.

Oral administration of protein antigen in solution routinely leads to development of oral tolerance in most mammals but has been reported to be fully immunogenic in chickens. Previous studies, including several performed by our laboratory, have demonstrated that oral administration of discrete amounts of BSA for 6 consecutive days is fully immunogenic. This study was performed to determine immu...
