Twin-rainbow metrology. I. Measurement of the thickness of a thin liquid film draining under gravity.
We describe twin-rainbow metrology, a new optical technique used to measure the thickness of thin films in a cylindrical geometry. We also present an application of the technique: measurement of the thickness of a Newtonian fluid draining under gravity. We compare these measurements with fluid mechanics models.
متن کاملThe galvanization of -amyloid in Alzheimer’s disease
W a decade ago thoughts of metals and Alzheimer’s disease (AD) conjured up thoughts of tossing out your aluminum cookware, more recently, zinc, copper, and iron have been implicated in AD pathology. These metals are not derived from your saucepan or deodorant, but are already resident in the brain. Zinc is not a trace metal in the brain. In fact, zinc, copper, and iron concentrations in gray ma...
متن کاملPenetration Experiments under Reduced Gravity
Penetration experiments will find several applications in exploration missions in the near future. Penetrators are common tools for the investigation of physical surface properties. The techniques and theories are widely applied under 1g condition on Earth and the results are used by engineers and scientists. The main contribution to the bearing resistance of a soil is combined of shaft and bas...
متن کاملSynthesis of syntactic steel foam using gravity-fed infiltration
In this study, we report a procedure for producing syntactic steel foams by melt infiltration of millimeter-sized ceramic microspheres. The gravity-fed infiltration method yields steel foam with uniform distributions of microspheres and negligible unintended porosity. The critical parameters in the manufacturing process are the melt temperature and the preheat temperature of the microspheres pr...
متن کاملAttachment to Stainless Steel by Mir Space Station Bacteria Growing Under Modeled Reduced Gravity at Varying Nutrient Concentrations
Four bacterial isolates (Chryseobacterium sp., Pseudomonas fluorescens and two Stenotrophomonas maltophilia isolates) originally isolated from the water system aboard the Mir Space Station were grown in two concentrations of nutrient broth under modeled reduced gravity using clinorotation. Sampling was performed over a 7 day period and planktonic cells were enumerated using 4′,6-diamidino-2-phe...
