Downstream development during ridging South Atlantic Ocean anticyclones

چکیده

Abstract Ridging South Atlantic high pressure systems (ridging highs) are often accompanied by cut-off low (COL) aloft, but may also occur without them, in which case a linear baroclinic wave would be observed propagating across the African domain upper troposphere. Using 41 years of ERA-5 reanalysis data, this study documents differences between characteristics prevailing dynamical processes and associated local eddy kinetic energy generation, its downstream transfer dissipation during these two scenarios. The shows that when COLs present then conversion is strong it confined east Greenwich Meridian, whereas located Africa much weaker, ridging occurs COLs. strength locations with differing jet streak configurations scenarios; lead to Rossby breaking absence thereof there COLs, respectively. presence leads trans-ridge development facilitates from midlatitudes into domain. When no present, trans-trough stronger than upstream ridge. Barotropic mean further highs. difference identified can traced back potential vorticity anomaly structures, largely due whether waves break or do not evolution events

Physiological and endocrine changes in Atlantic salmon smolts during hatchery rearing, downstream migration, and ocean entry

Billions of hatchery salmon smolts are released annually in an attempt to mitigate anthropogenic impacts on freshwater habitats, often with limited success. Mortality of wild and hatchery fish is high during downstream and early ocean migration. To understand changes that occur during migration, we examined physiological and endocrine changes in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) smolts during hatch...

Phylogeography of Rattus norvegicus in the South Atlantic Ocean

Norway rats are a globally distributed invasive species, which have colonized many islands around the world, including in the South Atlantic Ocean. We investigated the phylogeography of Norway rats across the South Atlantic Ocean and bordering continental countries. We identified haplotypes from 517 bp of the hypervariable region I of the mitochondrial D-loop and constructed a Bayesian consensu...

Fennerosquilla heptacantha (Crustacea: Stomatopoda: Squillidae) in South Atlantic Ocean.

Fennerosquilla is a monotypic genus that belongs to the family Squillidae, which has the highest generic diversity within Stomatopoda. This genus has been recorded in the north Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea, between 105 and 458 m depth. The present specimen was collected during the project "Avaliação da Biota Bentônica e Planctônica na porção offshore das Bacias Potiguar ...

Dynamics of wind-forced coherent anticyclones in open ocean

1 We numerically study the dynamics of coherent anticyclonic eddies in the ocean interior. For 2 the hydrostatic, rotating, stably-stratified turbulence we use a high-resolution, Primitive3 Equation model forced by small-scale winds in a idealized configuration. Many properties 4 of the horizontal motions are found to be similar to those of two-dimensional and quasi5 geostrophic turbulence. Maj...
