چکیده

Aims Pelvic radiotherapy adds significantly to the curative treatment of many pelvic malignancies. However, this cure comes at a cost for patients, where late bowel toxicities, such as faecal incontinence, urgency and diarrhoea, adversely affect quality life. Despite implementation advanced techniques in centres, there are deficiencies our knowledge how make best use these minimise with dose–volume constraints specifically effects needing definition. The aims study were establish predictors patient-reported toxicities derive clinical reduce risk toxicities. Materials methods All patients treated institution between 2012 2014 gynaecological urological cancers (bladder, prostate nodes treated) identified. Patients sent toxicity questionnaires 12 24 months after treatment. Planning computed tomography scans retrospectively contoured different definitions organs (OARs). Dose–volume data each OAR collected found using multivariate analysis. For those be significant on analysis, statistically clinically relevant derived. Furthermore, used validate from published studies. Results Faecal urgency, incontinence diarrhoea rates 52, 23.5 18.7% 203 included following radiotherapy. parameters sigmoid colon large OARs derived, which promising. Cost of pelvic floor repair for faecal incontinence.

BACKGROUND Pelvic floor repair is often unsuccessful for the treatment of incontinence. Some patients undergo repeated operations, and a few may require a stoma that can result in further operations. METHOD We have examined the cost of two forms of pelvic floor repair: post-anal repair (PAR; n = 47) and total pelvic floor repair (TPFR; n = 32). RESULTS Persistent incontinence, which had an ...

Patient-reported impotence and incontinence after nerve-sparing radical prostatectomy.

BACKGROUND The age-adjusted rate of radical prostatectomy, the most common treatment of early (nonmetastatic) prostate cancer, increased almost sixfold between 1984 and 1990. This increase was due in part to reported improvements in postoperative sexual potency after the use of newly developed "nerve-sparing" procedures. However, published estimates from physicians of impotence following variou...

Faecal candida and diarrhoea.

BACKGROUND Candida species are frequently isolated from stools of children with diarrhoea but are not proven enteropathogens. It is hypothesised that faecal candida causes diarrhoea. AIMS To determine the prevalence of faecal candida in childhood diarrhoea and the relation between faecal yeasts and diarrhoea. METHODS Comparison of clinical and laboratory data, including quantitative stool c...

The role of radiological imaging in the patient with gastrointestinal symptoms after pelvic radiotherapy

In recent years there have been sustained improvements in the outcomes from pelvic malignancy, with the introduction of new radiotherapy or combined chemotherapy– radiation treatment schedules [1,2]. Approximately four out of 10 people with cancer will have radiotherapy as part of their treatment. In the UK this includes about 12 000 patients annually who are treated with radiotherapy for pelvi...
