Domino?like water transport on Tillandsia through flexible trichome wings

چکیده
Tillandsia usneoides in epiphytic bromeliads takes up water through absorptive trichomes on the shoot surface under extreme environmental conditions. Although previous studies revealed way by which T. absorbs and prevents loss, its transport remains unclear. We characterized structures of trichome wings usneoides. Wing length-to-thickness ratio 136 interval (d)-to-wing length (l) (d/l) smaller than 1 caused film to flatten sequentially, resulting domino-like transport. A hinge-like linkage between wing outer ring cells size longer elastocapillary (LEC) brought about this unique reconfiguration, is flattening recovery wings. transported rapidly as propagated exterior with flexible distance at macroscopic scale grew tx x = 0.68 ± 0.04, unlike conventional scaling t0.5. Empirical theoretical investigations proved our assumption that external effect predominated over internal vascular Biomimetic simulated transport, highlighting important role arrays.

Tumbling dynamics of flexible wings
The influence of flexibility on the flight of autorotating winged seedpods is examined through an experimental investigation of tumbling rectangular paper strips freely falling in air. Our results suggest the existence of a critical length above which the wing bends. We develop a theoretical model that demonstrates that this buckling is prompted by inertial forces associated with the tumbling m...
متن کاملWater transport through the kidney
In occupational medicine, measurements of levels within the urine of toxic chemicals, or their metabolites, are used to indicate the level of exposure of workers to chemicals. In a worker’s body the kidney is the main organ taking care of the excretion of unwanted/toxic chemicals and the recovery of useful ones, via three mechanisms: filtration, reabsorption and secretion. We model these proces...

متن کاملDynamic Response of Highly Flexible Flying Wings
This paper presents a method to model and analyze the coupled nonlinear flight dynamics and aeroelasticity of highly flexible flyingwings. A low-order nonlinear strain-based finite element framework is used, which is capable of capturing the fundamental impact of geometrically nonlinear effects in a computationally effective formulation target for preliminary vehicle design and control evaluati...
متن کاملFlow Around Flapping Flexible Flat Plate Wings
This study investigates the unsteady flow phenomena generated from plunging wings with varying flexibility. The experiments were conducted in a wind tunnel with forward flight conditions at a chord based Reynolds number of 5300. The wings are fabricated out of homogeneous isotropic materials with values of 55 and 1702. The conditions of these experiments are matched to previous studies in a wat...
