On the polar derivative of a polynomial

For a polynomial p(z) of degree n, having all zeros in |z|< k, k< 1, Dewan et al [K. K. Dewan, N. Singh and A. Mir, Extension of some polynomial inequalities to the polar derivative, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 352 (2009) 807-815] obtained inequality between the polar derivative of p(z) and maximum modulus of p(z). In this paper we improve and extend the above inequality. Our result generalizes certai...

Snowballs Are Quasiballs

We introduce snowballs, which are compact sets in R3 homeomorphic to the unit ball. They are 3-dimensional analogs of domains in the plane bounded by snowflake curves. For each snowball B a quasiconformal map f : R3 → R3 is constructed that maps B to the unit ball.

Does the Jones Polynomial Detect the Unknot?

We address the question: Does there exist a non-trivial knot with a trivial Jones polynomial? To find such a knot, it is almost certainly sufficient to find a non-trivial braid on four strands in the kernel of the Burau representation. I will describe a computer algorithm to search for such a braid.

Space missions to detect the cosmic gravitational - wave background Neil

It is thought that a stochastic background of gravitational waves was produced during the formation of the universe. A great deal could be learned by measuring this Cosmic Gravitational-wave Background (CGB), but detecting the CGB presents a significant technological challenge. The signal strength is expected to be extremely weak, and there will be competition from unresolved astrophysical fore...
