‘Does God Mind?’: Reshaping Chinese Christian Rites of Passage, <i>c</i>.1877–1940

Chinese Anglicans and missionaries wrestled with the relationship between Christian rituals culture. Missionaries entered China preconceived notions about rites of passage, but quickly realized difficulties implementation. For example, backdrop Western imperialism, clergy reported ‘unworthy adherents’ misusing their certificates admission to churches only gain extraterritorial legal privileges. Another question was how far traditional wedding customs could be integrated into marriage. Students at Anglican schools wondered whether God would ‘mind’ if they believed Jesus in hearts, did not receive baptism because parental opposition, because, them, both faith filial piety mattered. The complexity social cultural context made it impossible prescribe set formats for passage. Instead, reshaped passage by referring loosely formulated guidelines, using case-by-case discretion, adjusting surroundings.
