چکیده

Abstract Although we know that spelling develops more slowly than reading in asymmetrically transparent orthographies, such as Italian, do not whether lags behind orthographies considered symmetrically for both and reading. This is because skills are rarely tested on the same lexical items, which impedes their direct comparison. study aimed to address this issue by comparing children’s accuracy items Turkish, highly spelling. The also examined an exceptional case, namely letter Ğ, can cause phonemic ambiguity potentially complicate but Turkish. Through two experiments, rates were nonword real word at grade 1 (Experiment 1, N = 40, M age 80.93 months, SD 2.79 months; Experiment 2, 39; 80.97 2.80 months). consistent findings from nonwords words (with Ğ or without Ğ) confirmed development lagged Turkish reduced had no effect accuracy. These raise questions about notion of symmetrical transparency: less cognitively demanding even case highlights most may have cases differentially affect therefore developmental trajectories skills. Clearly, they heard always result accurate spellings children should be explicitly taught cause.

Computer speech-based remediation for reading disabilities: the size of spelling-to-sound unit in a transparent orthography.

This study was designed to assess the effects of four reading-training procedures for children with reading disabilities (RD) in a transparent orthography, with the aim of examining the effects of different spelling-to-sound units in computer speech-based reading. We selected a sample of 83 Spanish children aged between 7 years 1 month and 10 years 6 months (M = 105.2, SD = 7.8) whose pseudowor...

Lexical orthography acquisition: Is handwriting better than spelling aloud?

Lexical orthography acquisition is currently described as the building of links between the visual forms and the auditory forms of whole words. However, a growing body of data suggests that a motor component could further be involved in orthographic acquisition. A few studies support the idea that reading plus handwriting is a better lexical orthographic learning situation than reading alone. H...

Spelling across Tasks and Levels of Language in a Transparent Orthography

The paper reports the results of two studies on the spelling performance of 1st graders in a transparent writing system. The spelling performance of Italian children was assessed to determine the cross-task relationship between spelling to dictation and spontaneous spelling at the single word level (Study 1) and at the text level (Study 2), respectively. In study 1, 132 Italian children's spell...

Developmental dyslexics and unimpaired children’s reading and memory for words in a transparent orthography

Word reading and short-term memory performance of forty two developmental dyslexics (mean age 10.1 years, SD = .7) and thirty three unimpaired reading age matched (mean age of 8.5, SD = .5) and thirty six unimpaired chronological age matched children (mean age of 10.6, SD = .7) was investigated in transparent Polish orthography. Fifty of the children were instructed that they were expected to r...

Spelling and reading development: The effect of teaching children multiple levels of representation in their orthography

A novel intervention was developed to teach reading and spelling literacy to 5 to 7 year-old students using explicit instruction of morphology, etymology, phonology, and form rules. We examined the effects of the intervention compared to a phonics-based condition using a cross-over design with a baseline measure. One hundred and twenty children attending an English state funded primary school w...
