Do transportation network companies increase or decrease transit ridership? Empirical evidence from San Francisco

چکیده

Abstract Transportation network companies (TNCs), such as Uber and Lyft, have been hypothesized to both complement compete with public transit. Existing research on the topic is limited by a lack of detailed data timing location TNC trips. This study overcomes that limitation using scraped from Application Programming Interfaces two TNCs, combined Automated Passenger Count transit use other supporting data. Using panel model change in bus ridership San Francisco between 2010 2015, confirming result separate time-series model, we find TNCs are responsible for net decline about 10%, offsetting gains factors service increases population growth. We do not statistically significant effect light rail ridership. Cities agencies should recognize transit-competitive nature they plan, regulate operate their transportation systems.

Understanding Public Transit Ridership through Gasoline Demand: Case Study in San Francisco Bay Area, CA

The long trends of fuel price increase along with increasing transit ridership over the past few decades has been established by past transit research. However, in 2008, there has been a drastic drop in the prices of oil, which has had significant effects on consumption patterns of gasoline. The objectives of this paper are two folds; firstly to ascertain the nature of the gasoline-transit ride...

Pedestrian Environments and Transit Ridership

This paper explores how the quality of the pedestrian environment around transit stops relates with transit ridership. The primary hypothesis tested is that transit tripmaking is higher in urban environments that are more conducive to non-motorized travel, given that bus transit systems are most frequently accessed via walking or biking. A secondary goal is to contribute to an improved understa...

Transit Fare Arbitrage: Case Study of San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) System

Transit fare arbitrage is the scenario when two or more commuters agree to swap tickets during travel in such a way that total cost is lower than otherwise. Such arbitrage allows pricing inefficiencies to be explored and exploited, leading to improved pricing models. In this paper we discuss the basics of fare arbitrage through an intuitive pricing framework involving population density. We the...

When do interactions increase or decrease primacy effect?

We propose an individual based model of attitude dynamics which, in some conditions, reproduces primacy effect behaviours. The primacy effect takes place when the attitude of an individual depends on the reception order of features describing an object. Typically, when receiving a strong negative feature first, the individual keeps a negative attitude whatever the number of moderate positive fe...

Do microcracks decrease or increase fatigue resistance in cortical bone?

Fatigue of cortical bone produces microcracks; it has been hypothesized that these cracks are analogous to those occurring in engineered composite materials and constitute a similar mechanism for fatigue resistance. However, the numbers of these linear microcracks increase substantially with age, suggesting that they contribute to increased fracture incidence among the elderly. To test these op...
