DNA barcode library revealed unknown diversity of chironomid midges in Montenegro

چکیده

We present the first results of study aiming to investigate diversity non-biting midges (Diptera: Chironomidae) fauna Skadar Lake system (Montenegro and Albania), a well-known hotspot freshwater biodiversity composed by young lake (originated 1200 before present) its old springs during Pliocene). During study, 8,147 COI barcodes were obtained revealed presence 474 BINs 586 OTUs assigned 148 species. Our provide insight into factual molecular among chironomids inhabiting basin fill significant gap in knowledge Balkan region. With 219 (46.2%) unique from new for BOLD, we can expect that further development barcode reference libraries will help bind unidentified developmental stages with those identified based on morphology reveal hidden Chironomidae species diversity. Further studies should be focused sampling which provides best species-level resolution, such as mature males. It develop reliable library - fundamental assessments.

An Asiatic Chironomid in Brazil: morphology, DNA barcode and bionomics

In most freshwater ecosystems, aquatic insects are dominant in terms of diversity; however, there is a disproportionately low number of records of alien species when compared to other freshwater organisms. The Chironomidae is one aquatic insect family that includes some examples of alien species around the world. During a study on aquatic insects in Amazonas state (Brazil), we collected specime...

DNA barcode reference library for Iberian butterflies enables a continental-scale preview of potential cryptic diversity

How common are cryptic species--those overlooked because of their morphological similarity? Despite its wide-ranging implications for biology and conservation, the answer remains open to debate. Butterflies constitute the best-studied invertebrates, playing a similar role as birds do in providing models for vertebrate biology. An accurate assessment of cryptic diversity in this emblematic group...

Field evaluation of controlled release pellet formulation of methoprene against chironomid midges in man-made lakes.

The duration of the efficacy of 4% methoprene pellets against emergence of chironomid midges, Chironomus stigmaterus Say, Goeldichironomus amazonicus (Fittkau) and Tanypus imperialis Sublette, in man-made lakes supplied with tertiary effluent water in Palm Desert, California, was dose dependent. For C. stigmaterus and T. imperialis, the rate of 4.5 kg/ha of the controlled release pellet formula...

Evidence of allergic hypersensitivity to chironomid midges in an English village community.

Some chironomid (non-biting) midges contain potent human allergens, principally in the form of insect haemoglobins. In view of previously demonstrated immunological cross-reactivity between some different midge species, the possible role of British midges in allergic disease was studied. The chosen site, Farmoor near Oxford, is a village that has been subject to several annual nuisance midge sw...

Laboratory toxicity of a new benzoylphenylurea insect growth regulator (UC-84572) against mosquitoes and chironomid midges.

The insecticidal potential of benzoylphenylurea (BPU) insect growth regulators (IGRs) has been studied since the early 1970s (Maas et al. 1981). A number of these IGRs have been evaluated in the laboratory and under field conditions against dipterous insects of medical and economic importance, particularly mosquitoes and chironomid midges (Ali and Lord 1980, Mulla and Darwazeh 1979). Among the ...
