Diversity of nuclear star cluster formation mechanisms revealed by their star formation histories

چکیده
Nuclear star clusters (NSCs) are the densest stellar systems in Universe and found centres of all types galaxies. They thought to form via mergers such as ancient globular (GCs) that spiral centre a result dynamical friction or through situ formation directly at galaxy centre. There is evidence both paths occur, but relative contribution either channel their correlation with properties not yet constrained observationally. Our aim was derive dominant NSC for sample 25 nucleated galaxies, mostly Fornax cluster, masses between M gal ∼ 10 8 10.5 ⊙ 5 8.5 . Using Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer data from 3D survey ESO archive, we derived histories, mean ages, metallicities NSCs, compared them host In many low-mass NSCs significantly more metal poor than hosts, similar GCs. contrast, massive galaxies find diverse histories cases ongoing recent formation. Massive (> 7 ) occupy different region mass–metallicity diagram lower-mass GCs, indicating enrichment history. We clear transition mass. hypothesise while GC accretion forms dwarf central responsible efficient mass build up most our sample. At intermediate channels can contribute. The these seems occur 9

Star Formation Efficiencies and Star Cluster Formation
Starbursts produce large numbers of Young Star Clusters (YSCs). Multi-color photometry in combination with a dedicated SED analysis tool allows to derive ages, metallicities, EB−V, and masses including 1σ uncertainties for individual clusters and, hence, mass functions for YSC systems. The mass function, known to be Gaussian for old Globular Cluster (GC) systems, is still controversial for YSC ...
متن کاملStar Cluster Formation and Star Formation: The Role of Environment and Star Formation Efficiencies
Analyzing global starburst properties in various kinds of starburst and post-starburst galaxies and relating them to the properties of the star cluster populations they form, I explore the conditions for the formation of massive, compact, long-lived star clusters. The aim is to find out whether the relative amount of star formation that goes into star cluster formation as opposed to field star ...
متن کاملEquilibrium Star Cluster Formation
We argue that rich star clusters take at least several local dynamical times to form, and so are quasi-equilibrium structures during their assembly. Observations supporting this conclusion include morphologies of star-forming clumps, momentum flux of protostellar outflows from forming clusters, age spreads of stars in the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) and other clusters, and the age of a dynamical...
متن کاملMassive Star and Star Cluster Formation
I review the status of massive star formation theories: accretion from collapsing, massive, turbulent cores; competitive accretion; and stellar collisions. I conclude the observational and theoretical evidence favors the first of these models. I then discuss: the initial conditions of star cluster formation as traced by infrared dark clouds; the cluster formation timescale; and comparison of th...
متن کاملObjective Determination of Star Formation Histories
Objective determination of a star formation history from a colourmagnitude diagram, independently of assumed parametric descriptions, is necessary to determine the evolutionary history of a galaxy. We introduce a new method for solving maximum likelihood problems through variational calculus, and apply it to the case of recovering an unknown star formation history, SFR(t), from a colour-magnitu...
