Disentangling vertical land motion and waves from coastal sea level altimetry and tide gauges

چکیده

In the context of global mean sea level rise, understanding drivers relative sea-level (RSL) at coast is major importance for coastal environments research and management. Since 1990s, combination satellite altimetry observations with in situ tide gauge data has provided a better variability, but challenges remain to quantify contributions possible (oceanic, vertical land motion (VLM), atmospheric wave). Here, over period 1993–2015, we combine concurrent from altimetry, gauges, oceanic model hindcast order identify predominant responsible long-term variability RSL 434 locations worldwide. We found that dominant driver trend ocean components 76% cases, VLM 17% waves 7%. Interestingly, no significant wave setup was noted considered most our stations. However, some locations, correlations between hindcasts data. Moreover, evidence substantial variance reduction once corrected setup. therefore recommend future studies aiming estimation consider applying corrections improve comparability measurements.

Vertical Motion determined using Satellite Altimetry and tide Gauges

A robust method to estimate vertical crustal motions by combining geocentric sea level measurements from decadal (1992 2003) TOPEX/POSEIDON satellite altimetry and long-term (> 40 years) relative sea level records from tide gauges using a novel Gauss-Markov stochastic adjustment model is presented. These results represent an improvement over a prior study (Kuo et al. 2004) in Fennoscandia, wher...

Monitoring Sea Level in the Coastal Zone with Satellite Altimetry and Tide Gauges

We examine the issue of sustained measurements of sea level in the coastal zone, first by summarizing the long-term observations from tide gauges, then showing how those are now complemented by improved satellite altimetry products in the coastal ocean. We present some of the progresses in coastal altimetry, both from dedicated reprocessing of the radar waveforms and from the development of imp...

Sea Level Determination Experiences at Cape of Begur Using Altimetry and Tide Gauges

Three Begur Cape experiences on radar altimeter calibration and marine geoid mapping made on 1999, 2000 and 2002 are overviewed. The marine geoid has been used to relate the coastal tide gauge data from l’Estartit harbour to off-shore altimetric data. The necessity to validate and calibrate the satellite’s altimeter due to increasing needs in accuracy and long term integrity implies establishin...

Coastal sea level rise in southern Europe and the nonclimate contribution of vertical land motion

[1] In this study, we extend the advanced approach of combining tide gauge and satellite altimetry data with supplemental equations from adjacent tide gauge records of at least 30 years of common data to investigate the relative importance of the nonclimate contribution of vertical land movement to the observed rates of sea level change along the coasts of southern Europe. The sensitivity tests...

Coastal sea level projections with improved accounting for vertical land motion

Regional and coastal mean sea level projections in the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) account only for vertical land motion (VLM) associated with glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA), which may significantly under- or over-estimate sea level rise. Here we adjust AR5-like regional projections with the VLM from Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) meas...
