Disentangling multiproxy temperature reconstructions from the subtropical North Atlantic

چکیده
Reliable reconstruction of past sea surface temperature (SST) is prime importance for understanding the Earth’s sensitivity to external forcing. Yet, it remains a major challenge in paleoceanography because comparison between SST estimates from different proxies reveals mismatches and raise question as what contrasting actually record. A better these light seasonal occurrence proxy bearing organisms (archives) water mass changes help assess climate models. Here, we analyze data last deglaciation using sediment core site situated at northern boundary North Atlantic subtropical gyre influenced by fast latitudinal migrations Azores Front (AF) resulting masses that may affect records. Are multiproxy climate reconstructions robust?
[1] 64 climate reconstructions, based on regression of temperature fields on multi-proxies and mutually distinguished by at least one of six standard criteria, cover an entire spread of millennial histories. No single criterion is accountable for the spread, which appears to depend on a complicated interplay of the criteria. The uncertainty is traced back to the fact that regression is applied ...
متن کاملAssessment of excess nitrate development in the subtropical North Atlantic
Geochemical estimates of N2 fixation in the North Atlantic often serve as a foundation for estimating global marine diazotrophy. Yet despite being well-studied, estimations of nitrogen fixation rates in this basin vary widely. Here we investigate the variability in published estimates of excess nitrogen accumulation rates in the main thermocline of the subtropical North Atlantic, testing the as...
متن کاملA global multiproxy database for temperature reconstructions of the Common Era
Reproducible climate reconstructions of the Common Era (1 CE to present) are key to placing industrial-era warming into the context of natural climatic variability. Here we present a community-sourced database of temperature-sensitive proxy records from the PAGES2k initiative. The database gathers 692 records from 648 locations, including all continental regions and major ocean basins. The reco...
متن کاملSalinity change in the subtropical Atlantic: Secular increase and teleconnections to the North Atlantic Oscillation
[1] Recent studies comparing shipboard data between the 1950’s and the 1990’s have shown significant, heterogeneous adjustments of the temperature-salinity structure of the N. Atlantic Ocean. Here, we present proxy records of temperature and salinity from aragonite sclerosponge skeletons, extending existing records of the Salinity Maximum Waters (SMW) of the N. Atlantic back to 1890. These prox...
متن کاملA Methodology for Robust Multiproxy Paleoclimate Reconstructions and Modeling of Temperature Conditional Quantiles.
Great strides have been made in the field of reconstructing past temperatures based on models relating temperature to temperature-sensitive paleoclimate proxies. One of the goals of such reconstructions is to assess if current climate is anomalous in a millennial context. These regression based approaches model the conditional mean of the temperature distribution as a function of paleoclimate p...
