Disagreement and a Functional Equal Weight View

چکیده

Abstract If a colleague of mine, whose opinion I respect, disagrees with me about some claim, this might give pause regarding my position on the matter. The Equal Weight view proposes that in such cases peer disagreement ought to colleague’s as much weight own, and decrease certainty disputed claim. One prominent criticism is treating higher-order (indirect) evidence way invariably swamps first-order (direct) evidence. While opinions our peers matter deliberations, counter-intuitively requires mere more important than standard kinds offer proposal for how we should idealize epistemic agents identifies variable feature disagreements accounts shifting significance direct indirect different contexts. Specifically, by idealizing deriving functions characterize non-subjective relationship between body reasonableness believing various propositions supported evidence, can accommodate intuition compromise motivates view, without accepting counter-intuitive results.

What Is the “ Equal Weight View ” ?

In this paper, we investigate various possible (Bayesian) precisifications of the (somewhat vague) statements of “the equal weight view” (EWV) that have appeared in the recent literature on disagreement. We will show that the renditions of (EWV) that immediately suggest themselves are untenable from a Bayesian point of view. In the end, we will propose some tenable (but not necessarily desirabl...

What is the “Equal Weight View”?

Suppose two agents, S1 and S2, are epistemic peers regarding a proposition p: that is, suppose S1 and S2 are equally competent, equally impartial, and equally able to evaluate and assess the relevant evidence regarding p (we will call such propositions p peer-propositions for S1 and S2). After carefully reflecting on the salient evidence for p, suppose S1 and S2 discover that they disagree abou...

Multi-View Learning in the Presence of View Disagreement

Traditional multi-view learning approaches suffer in the presence of view disagreement, i.e., when samples in each view do not belong to the same class due to view corruption, occlusion or other noise processes. In this paper we present a multi-view learning approach that uses a conditional entropy criterion to detect view disagreement. Once detected, samples with view disagreement are filtered...

Equal-Weight Fingerprinting Codes

We consider binary fingerprinting codes that trace at least one of t pirates using the marking assumption. Ensembles of binary equal-weight codes are considered along with a new efficient decoding algorithm. The design substantially increases the code rates of the former fingerprinting constructions. In particular, for large t, the new tfingerprinting codes have code rate of t−2 ln 2 and identi...
