Radiation Effects in Metals: Void Swelling and Irradiation Creep
Until about 1967 the most detrimental radiation effect expected to be suffered by the stainless-steel cladding of the fuel elements of the projected liquid-metal-cooled fast breeder reactor (LMFBR) was embrittlement due to exces sive hardening at low temperatures or helium agglornrration at grain boundaries at high temperatures, These problems, however, were at least qualitatively understood, ...
متن کاملFormation and Erosion of Wc under W Irradiation of Graphite
The bombardment of C with 100 keV and 1 MeV W at normal incidence is studied as a function of the incident W fluence experimentally and by computer simulation with the program TRIDYN. Calculated oscillations in the amount of retained W and in the target weight change are confirmed experimentally for 100 keV at room temperature. XPS investigations show W2C formation during ion implantation alrea...
متن کاملIrradiation-induced magnetism in graphite: a density functional study.
Recent experiments indicate that proton irradiation triggers ferromagnetism in originally nonmagnetic graphite samples while He ion bombardment has a much smaller effect. To understand the origin of irradiation-induced magnetism, we have performed spin-polarized density functional theory calculations of the magnetic properties of the defects which are most likely to appear under irradiation vac...
متن کاملInduced magnetic ordering by proton irradiation in graphite.
We provide evidence that proton irradiation of energy 2.25 MeV on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite samples triggers ferro- or ferrimagnetism. Measurements performed with a superconducting quantum interferometer device and magnetic force microscopy reveal that the magnetic ordering is stable at room temperature.
