Digital Rock Art: beyond 'pretty pictures'

The term ‘Rock Art’ is loosely used in this article to refer prehistoric carvings and paintings. Rock art research has changed profoundly the last two decades. Partly, due introduction of more ‘scientific’ methodologies such as digital recording, overcome subjective nature analogue documentation methods. Digital recording offers not only ‘pretty pictures’ but immediate quantifiable datasets methods analysis. As a result, new implementing complex, multi-scalar inter-relational analyses, which do focus solely on motifs or landscape location, encompass many variables rock assemblages, have been successful bringing wider narratives prehistory. This reflects interaction between archaeology, considering how application resources way we think, record conduct field. It will be illustrated by main case studies from Iberia: Schematic Art its painted form, Atlantic Art, carving tradition.
