Differential Eye Movements in Verbal and Nonverbal Search

چکیده
In addition to “nonverbal search” for objects, modern life also necessitates “verbal written words in variable configurations. We know less about how we locate novel spatial arrangements, as occurs on websites and menus, than when are located passages. this study leveraged eye tracking technology examine the hypothesis that objects simultaneously screened parallel while can only be found each directly foveated serial fashion. Participants were provided with a cue (e.g. rabbit) tasked finding thematically-related target carrot) embedded within an array including dozen distractors. The cues arrays comprised of object pictures nonverbal trials, verbal trials. keeping well-established “picture superiority effect,” picture targets identified more rapidly word targets. Eye movement analysis showed was promoted by viewing viewed serially. Different factors influenced performance stimulus modality; lexical characteristics such frequency modulated times during search, taxonomic category affected search. within-platform task conditions, examined cross-platform conditions where followed arrays, vice versa. Although taxonomically-related did not capture gaze they disproportionately preceded cues. Our findings suggest search associated qualitatively different strategies forms distraction, incorporates both.

Verbal and nonverbal predictors of language-mediated anticipatory eye movements.
During language comprehension, listeners often anticipate upcoming information. This can draw listeners' overt attention to visually presented objects before the objects are referred to. We investigated to what extent the anticipatory mechanisms involved in such language-mediated attention rely on specific verbal factors and on processes shared with other domains of cognition. Participants list...
متن کاملEye movements during search and detection in comparative visual search.
Motivated by the fact that previous visual memory paradigms have imposed encoding and retrieval constraints, the present article presents two experiments that address how observers allocate eye movements in memory and comparison processes in the absence of constraints. A comparative visual search design (Pomplun, Sichelschmidt, et al., 2001) was utilized in which observers searched for a differ...

Visual cognition depends critically on the moment-to-moment orientation of gaze. To change the gaze to a new location in space, that location must be computed and used by the oculomotor system.
