Differences in Mental Health, Help-Seeking and Barriers to Care Between Civilians and Sworn Members Working in Law Enforcement: A Research Note

Abstract Recent Canadian research indicates 44.5% of public safety personnel (PSP) self-report symptoms consistent with at least one type mental disorder; however, researchers have typically not focused on the wellness civilians working within PSP sectors. Given that number in law enforcement organizations has doubled since 2003, more than 30% all police Canada being civilians, is needed to support this understudied sub-population enforcement. The current study used a survey compare civilian members ( n = 80) and sworn 112) officers organization issues regarding disorders, perceived barriers care help-seeking behaviours. Results indicate high prevalence disorders lower resilience compared same organization. Civilians reported similar accessing health but were less likely willingness access supports their place employment. Our results need for equitable resources staff organizations.
