Diagnostic Modalities in Detecting Cardiovascular Complications of Thalassemia
نویسندگان
چکیده
Thalassemia major is the most common monogenetic disorder worldwide, manifested as chronic hemolytic anemia. This condition leads to need for blood transfusion be monitored an iron overload that may stored in several tissues and organs, including cardiomyocytes, might cause a broad spectrum of cardiac toxicities such heart failure conduction delays, myocarditis, arrhythmias. Non-invasive imaging modalities have their benefits limitations. Each modality complements generates comprehensive diagnostic monitoring siderosis thalassemia patients.

β-Thalassemia: New Therapeutic Modalities, Genetics, Complications, and Quality of Life
Beta-thalassemia is considered one of the most common genetic disorders which mass migration is introducing to countries worldwide and challenging them with its management. Advanced and improved medical care has allowed us to prolong the lives of thalassemia patients, simultaneously uncovering novel complications and outlining new challenges. We herein present in this special issue of Anemia so...
متن کاملSurvival and complications in thalassemia.
The life expectancy of patients with thalassemia major has significantly increased in recent years, as reported by several groups in different countries. However, complications are still frequent and affect the patients' quality of life. In a recent study from the United Kingdom, it was found that 50% of the patients had died before age 35. At that age, 65% of the patients from an Italian long-...
متن کاملNeurological complications in b-thalassemia
Over the years, several reports have demonstrated involvement of the nervous system in b-thalassemia patients. Neurological complications have been attributed to various factors such as chronic hypoxia, bone marrow expansion, iron overload, and desferrioxamine neurotoxicity. In most cases, neurological involvement does not initially present with relevant signs or symptoms (i.e., is subclinical)...
متن کاملEvaluation of cardiovascular complications with 99mTc tetrofosmin gated myocardial perfusion scintigraphy in patients with thalassemia major.
OBJECTIVE Iron overload limits the life expectancy of thalassaemic patients by causing cardiac toxicity. Iron also plays a catalytic role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of (99m)Tc Tetrofosmin gated myocardial perfusion scintigraphy (GMPS) in the detection of cardiac dysfunction in patients with thalassemia major. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fo...
متن کاملCommon Complications in Beta-Thalassemia Patients
Even the life span has prolonged for the last 40 years, increase in frequently seen complications with increasing age negatively affect the life quality of thalassemia patients. In our study, complications encountered in 67 ß-thalassemia patients who were followedup at our hospital between 1 January 2004 and 31 May 2009 were retrospectively analyzed. Fifty-six patients were followed up with dia...
