Devouring the Milky Way Satellites: Modeling Dwarf Galaxies with Galacticus

چکیده
Dwarf galaxies are ubiquitous throughout the universe and extremely sensitive to various forms of internal external feedback. Over last two decades, census dwarf in Local Group beyond has increased markedly. Modeling the Milky-Way Satellite galaxies
We revisit the Milky Way satellite problem using a semi-analytical model of galaxy formation and compare the predicted luminosity function to recent result from the SDSS. With cosmic photoionization, the luminosity function can be brought into broad agreement with the data between −15 < MV < −2. This improvement over previous semi-analytical model results (e.g., Benson et al. 2002) is from our ...
متن کاملUnveiling the corona of the Milky Way via ram-pressure stripping of dwarf satellites
The spatial segregation between dwarf spheroidal (dSph) and dwarf irregular galaxies in the Local Group has long been regarded as evidence of an interaction with their host galaxies. In this paper, we assume that ram-pressure stripping is the dominant mechanism that removed gas from the dSphs and we use this to derive a lower bound on the density of the corona of the Milky Way at large distance...
متن کاملDark Matter Subhalos and the Dwarf Satellites of the Milky Way
The Via Lactea simulation of the cold dark matter halo of the Milky Way predicts the existence of many thousands of bound subhalos with masses above a few ×106 M⊙, distributed approximately with equal mass per decade of mass. Here we show that: a) a similar steeply rising subhalo mass function is also present at redshift z = 0.5 in an elliptical-sized halo simulated with comparable resolution i...
متن کاملProbing the Epoch of Reionization with Milky Way Satellites
While the connection between high-redshift star formation and the local universe has recently been used to understand the observed population of faint dwarf galaxies in the Milky Way (MW) halo, we explore how well these nearby objects can probe the epoch of first light. We construct a detailed, physically motivated model for the MW satellites based on the state-of-the-art Via Lactea II dark-mat...
متن کاملThe orbital poles of Milky Way satellite galaxies: a rotationally supported disc-of-satellites
Available proper motion measurements of Milky Way (MW) satellite galaxies are used to calculate their orbital poles and projected uncertainties. These are compared to a set of recent cold dark-matter (CDM) simulations, tailored specifically to solve the MW satellite problem. We show that the CDM satellite orbital poles are fully consistent with being drawn from a random distribution, while the ...
