Devices to fight catheter-related infections

چکیده

Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAI) affect ~1.7 M people in the USA and 4.1 Europe, contributing to 99,000 37,000 deaths/year, respectively. Catheter-related infections are most frequent cause of HAI, leading life-threatening complications colossal medical costs. Current prevention/treatment options – sterilization protocols, lock solutions, systemic antibiotic administration inefficient lead bacterial resistance, a huge threat public health. This review addresses existing solutions market mostly catheter caps –, emerging alternatives, fight catheter-related infections. Graphene-based biomaterials arise as interesting weapons against these infections, particularly combination with light: their photothermal photodynamic properties boost own antimicrobial action, allowing them kill bacteria without resistance.

New materials and devices for preventing catheter-related infections

Catheters are the leading source of bloodstream infections for patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). Comprehensive unit-based programs have proven to be effective in decreasing catheter-related bloodstream infections (CR-BSIs). ICU rates of CR-BSI higher than 2 per 1,000 catheter-days are no longer acceptable. The locally adapted list of preventive measures should include skin antisepsis w...

Infections associated with indwelling devices: infections related to extravascular devices.

Infection complications of indwelling extravascular devices are reviewed including endotracheal tubes, urological catheters, cerebrospinal shunts, ocular prostheses, orthopedic protheses, peritoneal dialyses catheters, and IUDs. For each device a small number of pathogens accounts for the majority of infections. For most devices, infections of host skin origin, especially coagulase negative s...

Review of recommendations to prevent and reduce catheter-related bloodstream infections

ABSTRACT Aim. We sought to review studies regarding interventions to prevent or reduce catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs). Background. CRBSIs are associated with peripheral and central intravenous catheters, including nontunneled central catheters, tunneled central catheters, peripherally inserted central venous catheters (PICC), totally implanted intravascular access devices (por...
