Development of Aluminium Metal Foams via Friction Stir Processing by Utilizing MgCO3 Precursor

Aluminium foams possess multi-functional properties and a low specific weight, making them one of the most suitable choices in application domain automobile aviation sectors, vibrating machining, structural parts. Compared to traditional fabrication routes, friction stir processing (FSP) is gaining acceptance as it cost-effective, highly efficient, innocuous process fabricate foam precursors from bulk substrate. In current study, FSP was utilized develop precursor with MgCO3 powder acting blowing agent. The experiments were performed per Taguchi’s L8 orthogonal array. heat treated an electric furnace at holding temperature 650 °C for 10 min. After post-heat treatments, this resulted porous structure due evolution CO2 gas composite. simultaneous effect tool rotation speed, traverse shoulder diameter investigated on pore size porosity produced. composite parameter “unit stirring” found be closely related processed zone (PZ) volume rate zone, size, degree porosity. highest 16.67% obtained average 10.5 µm. largest 17.8 µm, observed associated 14.40%. analysis Kiviat plot revealed that values PZ area polar symmetry unit stirring. density both symmetrically distributed about
