Developing tree ring chronologies from New Zealand matai (Prumnopitys taxifolia (D.Don) Laub.) for archaeological dating: Stable isotope dendrochronology

چکیده
Aotearoa New Zealand has a rich cultural heritage but dating wooden objects using classic dendrochronology is challenging due to paucity of master tree-ring width chronologies for species commonly identified in the archaeological record. This paper explores potential stable isotopic approach matai (Prumnopitys taxifolia (D.Don) Laub.). A total six annual oxygen isotope (δ18O) series growing Pureora Forest Reserve, were analysed and their isotopes found exhibit level coherence that enabled cross-dating. provisional chronology covering period 1930–2018 CE was developed tested against sample from Kauaeranga Valley (200 km north Pureora) miro ferruginea Miro another common archive, also difficult date ring-width dendrochronology. Both Kaueranga samples cross matched site at correct position, with weaker statistics (Student’s t: 4.26 4.11 respectively) compared results obtained two (non-2019) sampled this study (Student's 6.80 5.66). These nevertheless demonstrate presence regional-scale signal which may be future use as precision tool.

Extension of New Zealand kauri (Agathis australis) tree-ring chronologies into Oxygen Isotope Stage (OIS) 3
New Zealand kauri (Agathis australis) is both long-lived and sensitive to climate so during the past two decades an extensive network of sites has been sampled for dendrochronological analyses. The network can be divided into three general groups based on the time period they cover— ‘modern’ kauri (MK), late-Holocene kauri (HK) and ‘ancient’ kauri (AK) from before the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM)...

In order to establish an estimate of the ages of large Pacific madrone (Arbutus menziesii) trees growing atop the bluffs on Magnolia Boulevard in Seattle, Washington, I obtained stump-discs from madrones cut by the Seattle Parks Department in June 1994. Each disc was sectioned into smaller pieces to allow processing with standard woodworking techniques. After initial processing, each slab was s...

PLOS ONE Volume 8 includes an article "The First New Zealanders: Patterns of Diet and Mobility Revealed through Isotope Analysis". The paper proposes that burial groups within the settlement phase site of Wairau Bar differ in terms of dietary stable isotopes and 87Sr/86Sr. The authors argue this difference is probably due to one group being a founding population while the other burials are late...
متن کاملDendrochronology: a Review with Emphasis on New Zealand Applications
The distinction is drawn in this paper between true dendrochronological studies (using crossdating) and studies using tree-ring counts to age trees or date events. The advantages of the former approach are emphasized. We summarize the main methods used in dendrochronology, concentrating on new approaches and techniques important in the New Zealand context, present a review of recent dendrochron...

Dendrochronological research in North-Central Europe and the East Mediterranean has produced networks of long regional oak (Quercus sp.) reference chronologies that have been instrumental in dating, provenancing, and paleoclimate research applications. However, until now these two important tree-ring networks have not been successfully linked. Oak forests and historical/archaeological sites in ...
