Developing an Environmental Impact Assessment for Floating Island Applications

In the Space@Sea project a conceptual study is performed to develop standardized cost efficient floating modular islands with low environmental impact. As these are introduced for purpose which likely determine impact, possible applications were considered: living, aquaculture, ports and logistics, energy hub. The aim of this structured approach Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) their as considered within project. To contribute efficiency sustainability future island developments, early awareness consequences important requires solid knowledge base. that end we recommend screening identify main threats marine ecosystem potential impacts at earliest (conceptual) stage development. For each type application, should through an EIA links critical pressures sensitive components. While conventional impact assessments only consider negative impacts, also benefits islands. This not enhance more environmental-friendly designs but provide balanced perspective considers opportunities in developments implementation applications.
