Determining Bishop's parameter χ based on pore size distribution

چکیده
Extension of the effective stress concept to unsaturated soils has been a major concern for decades. Recent studies significantly contributed understanding fundamentals behind Bishop's parameter χ, which is generally used define soils. An examination recently proposed methods showed that contribution suction was often overestimated, especially in high range. In this study, considering soil pores with different sizes contribute differently overall hydro-mechanical behaviour, new method determine χ proposed. The key variable ratio change water volume macropore void due loading at constant suction. Shear strength data weakly expansive clay were validation. A good agreement obtained between prediction and measurement, indicating validity method.

Porosity and Pore Size Distribution
A soil’s porosity and pore size distribution characterize its pore space, that portion of the soil’s volume that is not occupied by or isolated by solid material. The basic character of the pore space affects and is affected by critical aspects of almost everything that occurs in the soil: the movement of water, air, and other fluids; the transport and the reaction of chemicals; and the residen...
متن کاملInvestigation of Activation Time on Pore Size Distribution of Activated Carbon Determined with Different Methods
Three activated carbons are synthesized in a rotary reactor at different activation times. The adsorption isotherms of the samples are measured The pore size distribution of the samples is determined using combined Saito and Foley method, BJH method. An average potential function has been determined inside the cylindrical pores. The effect of activation time on the pore size distribution sample...
متن کاملPore Size Distribution in Granular Material Microstructure
Pore scale modeling plays a key role in fluid flow through porous media and associated macroscale constitutive relationships. The polyhedral shape and effective local pore size within granular material microstructure are computed in this study by means of the Euclidean Distance Transform (EDT), a local maxima search (non-maximum suppression), and a segmentation process. Various synthetic packed...

In a recent paper the author has suggested a model which each lipid has more space available. This leads for a two-dimensional lipid bilayer in which both shortto an increase in the energy of the configuration. range repulsive forces and long-range attractive forces Because of the very large number of degrees of freeplay a role, and for which the equilibrium statistical dom the outcome of this ...
متن کاملDetermining the Optimal File Size on Tertiary Storage Systems Based on the Distribution of Query Sizes
In tertiary storage systems, the data is stored on multiple tape volumes where each tape is further divided into files. Since in many such systems the minimum unit of data transfer is a file, it is an important problem to match file sizes with the access patterns to the data. In general, if the file size is large relative to the query size it will lead to the transfer of large amount of irrelev...
