چکیده

Bambara groundnut is a highly nutritious underutilized legume with enormous potential to sustain food security in resource-poor countries. However, its for improvement through conventional breeding (< 2% success rate) limitation due the nature of flowers. Thus, most viable method improving this crop by creating genetic variability induced mutagenesis. The present study was conducted evaluate radiosensitivity two varieties irradiated acute and chronic gamma irradiations determine lethal dose (LD) growth reduction (GR). Healthy seeds both were exposed irradiation using Cesium-137 at 0, 25, 50, 75, 100, 125, 150, 175, 200, 250, 300 Gy. For irradiation, two-week-old seedlings genotypes accumulated doses 8.52, 17.04, 35.56, 34.09, 42.61, 59.65, 93.74, 144.87, 255.64, 570.94 Gy, respectively, Gamma Green House (GGH) 60 days. result from variance analysis indicated significant differences (P < 0.01) all evaluated traits except internode length. A linear regression model developed mean LD GR genotypes. established (LD25, 75) on Ex-Sokoto variety 160, 250 Gy while 68, 148, 227 recorded Karo variety, respectively. 47, 444 whereas 70, 264, 452 observed Karo. Variations between gamma-irradiated methods irradiations. Generally, growth, development, survival rate increase decrease gamma-irradiation doses. can be utilized large-scale mutagenesis programs generating wide range mutants groundnut.

In Vitro Seeds Germination and Seedling Growth of Bambara Groundnut (Vigna subterranea (L.) Verdc. (Fabaceae))

Bambara groundnut (Vigna subterranea (L.) Verdc.) is an indigenous grain legume. It occupies a prominent place in the strategies to ensure food security in sub-Saharan Africa. Development of an efficient in vitro regeneration system, a prerequisite for genetic transformation application, requires the establishment of optimal conditions for seeds germination and plantlets development. Three type...

Genetic diversity in Bambara groundnut (Vigna subterranea L.) germplasm revealed by RAPD markers.

Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers were used to assess genetic diversity in Bambara groundnut (Vigna subterranea L.) germplasm using 25 African accessions from the collection in the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture, Ibadan, Nigeria. Fifty random decamer primers were screened to assess their ability to detect polymorphism in bambara; 17 of them were selected for this...

African origin of Bradyrhizobium populations nodulating Bambara groundnut (Vigna subterranea L. Verdc) in Ghanaian and South African soils

Flavonoids secreted by legumes play a major role as signal molecules for attracting compatible rhizobia. The aim of this study was to assess and understand the diversity of microsymbionts nodulating Bambara groundnut (Vigna subterranea L. Verdc.) landraces of different seedcoat colours using restriction fragment length polymorphism and phylogenetic analysis. Seedcoat pigmentation of landraces h...

Variation in Pod Yield Characters and Heritability Estimates in Some Cultivars of Bambara Groundnut (Vigna subterranea (L.) Verdc

Variation in pod and seed yield among twelve cultivars of Bambara groundnut was investigated in 2004 and 2005 cropping seasons. The mean performance revealed that BG7004AS despite its recorded low number of pods per plant, had the highest 100 seed weight, pod width, pod length, seed width and seed length, followed by BG7002AS, BG7009BS and BG70010AS, which had the best yield and yield component...

Trypsin Inhibitor Activity and Condensed Tannin Content in Bambara Groundnut (Vigna Subterranea (L.) Verdc) Grown in Southern Africa

Legumes are an important source of protein in many developing countries. However this protein is not readily available because of antinutrients. Farmers are being encouraged to grow bambara groundnut to meet food sufficiency, hence information on the content of antinutrients is required. The objective of the study was to compare antinutrients trypsin inhibitor activity and condensed tannin cont...
