Detector dog training shows companion-dogs rapidly remember the what and where of instinctively significant scents

چکیده

Companion dogs with no previous experience were trained in a drug detector dog adapted method to recognise the scents of ‘prey’ animals and allowed sleep their natural habitat, at home owners. After each two consecutive nights they evaluated on next days. We tested declarative memory (knowing that) also procedural how), by using chase-and-fetch training testing routines, which involved walking running around as well sniffing. All able remember what trained-for most where against distractors. There indications that scent could be reinforced can further learned day. training, when denied day time evening sleeps instead provided stimulating activities, surprisingly still showed ‘first-night-effect’ (of disrupted subsequent reduction) successfully found scents, was attributed either robust short sleep-wake cycles, them being highly motivated habitat. Our evidence after (using dominant sense smell) our all aspects including both NREM REM demonstrated especially memories significant difference number sessions per hour, asleep, session length, percentage or latency between normal night compared day/evening sleep.
These findings provide indication dogs’ self applying same criteria for humans. sign old is not reduced are monitored home. believe it possible companion owners whose enthusiastically fetch, readily train own this

Selecting shelter dogs for service dog training.

Service dogs are an essential aid to persons with disabilities, providing independence, mobility, and improved self-esteem. Because of these proven benefits, the growing se of service dogs is creating a demand and supply crisis. One major cause is the 50% verage dropout rate for dogs selected for training. Weiss and Greenber (1997) re-cently found that a dog, successful on the most commonly use...

Human-directed social behaviour in dogs shows significant heritability.

Through domestication and co-evolution with humans, dogs have developed abilities to attract human attention, e.g. in a manner of seeking assistance when faced with a problem solving task. The aims of this study were to investigate within breed variation in human-directed contact seeking in dogs and to estimate its genetic basis. To do this, 498 research beagles, bred and kept under standardize...

Rapid tuning of auditory "what" and "where" pathways by training.

Behavioral improvement within the first hour of training is commonly explained as procedural learning (i.e., strategy changes resulting from task familiarization). However, it may additionally reflect a rapid adjustment of the perceptual and/or attentional system in a goal-directed task. In support of this latter hypothesis, we show feature-specific gains in performance for groups of participan...
