Isolation and Screening of Cellulose Degrading Bacteria in Kitchen Waste and Detecting Their Degrading Potential

The present paper investigates cellulose degrading bacteria present in kitchen waste for highest cellulase activity and growth of bacteria at optimum temperature and pH. Sample was collected from domestic kitchen waste and bacterial strains were isolated using nutrient agar media. Enrichment technique was used for isolating CDB (cellulose degrading bacteria) strains. The objective of research w...

Digesting GWAS

nce upon a time, medical genetics was a relaOtively straightforward business: one gene—one protein—one disease was sufficient to explain most inherited disease and was neatly in keeping with Gregor Mendel’s discovery of alleles with his famous peas. The concept remains a good starting point but the biology of life is somewhat more complex, and increasingly we have become impressed and perplexed...

Cuckoo Fungus Mimics Termite Eggs by Producing the Cellulose-Digesting Enzyme β-Glucosidase

Insects and fungi share a long history of association in various habitats, including the wood-decomposition niche. Fungal mimicry of termite eggs is one of the most striking evolutionary consequences of insect-fungus association. Termites of the genus Reticulitermes often harbor fungal sclerotia, called "termite balls," along with eggs in nursery chambers, whereby the fungus gains a competitor-...

Draft Genome Sequence of Cellulose-Digesting Bacterium Sporocytophaga myxococcoides PG-01

Sporocytophaga myxococcoides, a Gram-negative bacterium isolated from soil, is an efficient hydrolyzer of crystalline cellulose. Here, we report its draft genome sequence, which may provide important genetic information regarding the cellulolytic and hemicellulolytic enzymes that contribute to the cellulose-degrading abilities of this bacterium.
